March 2016 - Wildebeest migration updates

Hi HerdTracker,

The wildebeest migration is in Seronera now, hopefully they'll be here for a few more weeks since it's very dry in other parts of the Serengeti.
 
We had a great view of the wildebeest and zebra moving around- see pictures below.

Hi HerdTracker,

Mixed herds of wildebeest, zebra and eland are spread across the plains south of Ndutu, with sporadic storms and showers greening up the grass and keeping the pans filled with water.

It's hot and you can feel the rains wanting to kick on or sweep away. perhaps with the new moon.

The residents zebra and wildebeest are crossing the Olare Orok River into the Mara Reserve, Thomsons gazelle were not left out in enjoying the splash.

Seems like the rainy seasons is back in the savannah, last evening and this evening was a good indicator that long rains are here with us.

After flying into and driving through Seronera yesterday, we saw long lines and big mixed herds of wildebeest and zebra on the plains south of Seronera and drinking along the Seronera River.

Yesterday morning, we had an amazing balloon safari in Central Serengeti. We floated over vast herds of migrating wildebeest for just over an hour in the Seronera Valley. They are early this year!

Hi HerdTracker,

After the showers last night, we spotted the Loita / resident zebra slowly drifting back east towards the Olare Orok Conservancy.

They are hanging between Olare Orok and the Ntiaktiak Rivers, however, still a good number of them are still feeding at Topi Plains.

The herds are passing Pioneer Camp and can be seen in the thousands on the main road south of Seronera to the junction of Sopa / Lake Magadi.

Yesterday afternoon and evening, we recorded 30mm rain. Today, we had another heavy storm.

The herds are on the move towards central Serengeti at the moment (a few weeks early).

They are finally here! Hundreds and thousands of residents / Loita zebras have arrived in the Mara Reserve, since last year October. 

They were residing in Mara North, Olare Orok, Naboisho, Lemek and Olkinyei Conservancy. There is plenty of grass in Mara so they are having a big party.

The herds are moving along the Moru Kopjes, to Lake Magadi and then towards Mawe Simba at the moment..... large herds.

We had a quiet morning drive towards Big Marsh, but suddenly I heard the stampede and I thought it was wind.  From Miti Mitatu, when I looked through my binoculars, I couldn’t quite believe my eyes - a large herd of wildebeest and zebras coming from the direction of Olbaye toward the open woodland that goes to the Marsh.  

We spent the whole morning with them. They are moving to the marsh woodland very fast in their hundreds of thousands. This follows the heavy rain from yesterday arround Ndutu especially the area surrounding the lakes.

A large rainstorm through the centre has seen a lot of the herds head for the Kusini area. We still have significant numbers down as we do all season here in Kakessio.

The Osinoni pack of wild dog being especially active, hunting the calves, often taking up to three in a go, both morning and evening.

It's raining again at Ndutu. Having just got themselves to Kusini and Moru, the wildebeest have turned around and are arriving back on the Ndutu plains. Such are the endless miles of a migratory animal.

There are lots of wildebeest on the plains between Ubuntu and Ndutu and more now around Kusini and towards Moru Kopjes.

I just returned from a four day safari in Ndutu. There are a few herds dispersed in the Makao Plains near Camp Zebra.

I'm planning to sort out my pictures as soon as I have caught up with my emails. I expect to have a picture ready for you by tomorrow to post on HerdTracker.

We had 25mm rain last night. There are wildebeest and zebra around the camp, with trails of zebra walking from Moru Kopjes, past Serengeti Pioneer Camp.

The migration for the last couple of days has been close to Moru Kopjes, around 30,000 plus wildebeest with babies and zebra.

We have been experiencing a mini calving season at Naboisho Conservancy, Calves are being dropped at least daily and hence party time to the predators.

They were around the Kusini area about a week ago but have moved further south into the Maswa concession it seems.

The wildebeest seem to be fairly scattered all over the place at the moment, on the plains north of here to Ndutu, Secret Valley and towards Moru Kopjes.
